Safe tourism guideline decision delayed

The National Taskforce on Resilience Building and Economic Recovery has concluded its meeting without a decision on the guideline for the Maldives to recommence tourism.

The Tourism Ministry has formulated a draft guideline to recommence tourism in the country which is at a standstill due to COVID-19. The guideline was formed after discussions with tourism industry stakeholders.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met with the task force on economic recovery for the first time. Tourism Minister Ali Waheed, today presented the draft guideline.

President’s Office said that a decision on the guideline will be made at the next meeting.

Discussions during the meeting focused on the sectors of work being undertaken by the three working groups of the task force. The three groups are economic recovery, finance group, and social sector work.

Information regarding the areas of focus and priority, planned activity for the economy as well as budget revisions and financial proceedings were presented at the meeting today.

President Solih highlighted the purpose of the taskforce when commencing the meeting. He noted that the country had capability to overcome the virus with increased capabilities of the country in the health sector due to work conducted against the pandemic virus COVID-19.
