The Parliament has begun to take statements from the complainants of cases lodged at the National Integrity Commission (NIC) after the Committee on National Security Services identified negligence on the part of the Commission on investigating these claims.
The NIC was formed to investigate claims of unlawful actions made against state institutions such as the Maldives Police Service, Maldives Customs, Maldives Immigration, and the Maldives Correctional Services. The Commission is tasked with forwarding the conclusions of such investigations to the Maldives Police Service and the Prosecutor General’s Office if it finds wrongdoings that are deemed as actionable by bringing forward criminal charges.
An announcement by the Parliament today read that the National Security Committee had identified misconduct and negligence by the Commission regarding such claims and complaints as of recently. A sub-committee of the parliament was formed in order to investigate this. The sub-committee has now begun an inquiry into the negligence of the NIC in undertaking its legal duties and responsibilities.
The sub-committee noted that since the NIC had failed to investigate these complaints, it was imperative to obtain the statements of those who lodged the cases.
The Committee requested anyone that wished to provide information to the Committee regarding the complaints lodged to submit the information before June 16, 14:00. The information to be submitted should contain the name, address and contact number of the complainant. Written documents are to be submitted for the purpose, and the parliament requested to email the documents to [email protected].
