COVID-19: 26 new cases confirmed, recoveries rise above 1000

Health Protection Agency has just announced the confirmation of 26 new COVID-19 cases in the Maldives.

The total number of cases in the Maldives now stands at 1,942. 

The confirmed cases today include:

  • 19 locals
  • 07 Bangladeshi nationals

Health protection Agency also stated that there were 939 individuals in isolation with a further 532 individuals in quarantine. So far eight deaths have been reported in the Maldives in connection with the virus. They include four elderly locals and four Bangladeshi nationals.

Recoveries rise above 1000

The number of recoveries from COVID-19 in the Maldives has now surpassed the 1000 mark. HPA said that 85 people have recovered from the virus in the Maldives today. The total number of recoveries in the country now stands at 1,010.

The number of active cases in the Maldives has now fallen 922 due to the number of recoveries. Authorities have so far collected 31,697 samples for the virus along with repeat samples.

The country identified its first COVID-19 case on March 7 and declared a state of public health emergency over the pandemic four days later on March 11. Male’ City identified its first COVID-19 case on April 15, prompting a city-wide lockdown and a nationwide ban on nonessential travel.

The populous capital has since become the epicenter of the outbreak in the country, contributing to over 90 percent of the total cases.

While the authorities have begun relaxing the Male’ lockdown in a bid to promote economic activity, health experts continue to warn people to wear masks, practice social distancing, practice good hygiene and maintain other infection-prevention measures.
