Police Spokesperson Chief Inspector Izmia Zahir has been dismissed from her post and replaced with Superintendent of Police Yoonus Sobah who will now lead the department.
Police have now confirmed the dismissal of Chief Inspector Izmia to the media after speculation began to circulate.
A message issued to media outlets of the country read that the appointment of Superintendent Yoonus was on a temporary basis. Daily media information operations will be conducted by Chief Station Inspector Athifa Hassan, read the message.
The message also thanked the cooperation and good relations maintained by media of the country with Chief Inspector Izmia during her almost one and half year tenure at the post.
Police also thanked Chief Inspector Izmia for her efforts to strengthen connections between Police and media outlets of the country in the message.
Izmia was appointed as the spokesperson of Police on December 19, 2018. She has been subject of criticism from some journalists in the country for discrimination and complaints regarding the Chief Inspector were even submitted to the Maldives Media Council.
Chief Inspector Izmia is a graduate of Singapore National Police Academy and has a Master’s Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from Australia.
