National Emergency Operations Center, on Wednesday, announced that the people to test positive for COVID-19 in Maldives included 137 frontline workers.

While the NEOC had previously specified positive cases within Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defense Force, it later decided that it posed a threat to national security, and announced that it would therefore release numbers on positive cases among all frontline workers, without further specification.

At a NEOC press briefing on Wednesday night, Health Protection Agency (HPA) epidemiologist Dr. Ibrahim Afzal shared the numbers on positive cases among frontline workers.

137 frontline workers have tested positive for COVID-19. And the biggest one-day spike in cases among frontline workers had been recorded on May 1 with 47 cases.

22 frontline workers tested positive on April 29, and 15 tested positive on May 10.

Dr. Afzal said that some of the frontlines belonged to clusters identified on days in which Maldives identified its biggest spikes.

He also said that special attention is paid to contact tracing and other surrounding aspects when frontline workers test positive.

968 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Maldives. 40 have since recovered and four have died from complications.
