Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced that 86 new cases of CVODI-19 have been tested positive in the Maldives.

A tweet from the official account of HPA stated that the confirmed cases of the virus today included 67 Bangladeshis, 14 Maldivians, 3 Indians, 1 Sri Lankan, and 1 Nepali individual. The sudden spike with these confirmed cases means that the current number of infections in the country has now increased to 734 cases.

The agency also stated that the samples that tested positive today included those from vulnerable locations. The locations are being monitored by the authorities.

Medical professionals in the country have warned that the country could expect a peak in cases at the end of May. Projections show that 1500 cases may occur in the country on the peak day of May 31. With the limited testing capability, authorities would be able to only identify 400 cases on the peak day.

The projected total figure for infections in the country stands at around 77,000 cases, while the country could suffer 900 deaths from the virus according to the projections.

The Maldives has so far recorded three deaths from the virus, with the most recent patient, an 80-year-old in the intensive care at the Dharumavantha Hospital passing away last night. The country has also recorded 20 recoveries from the virus so far.
