No cooperation from Male

Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that Male’ City Council has stopped cooperating with efforts to compile land records.

Speaking at a ceremony held last night to devolve 49 lands to the respective Island Councils, Muizzu said that the cooperation of Male’ and Addu City Council is essential in compiling land records; however, Male’ City Council stopped cooperating with these efforts subsequent to the change of government.

The Maldivian Land Act stipulates that land records must be written and maintained.

“It is with sadness that I note that Male’ City Council has refused to assist in this matter for the past eight months,” Muizzu said.

He said that Councils’ assistance is essential in preparing the Land Information System (LIS), which should be in place before land records can be completed.

“Establishment of an LIS will facilitate the completion of the land records. It requires people’s addresses, incomes, and other similar information. The Ministry needs all Councils to cooperate in these efforts,” Muizzu said.

He said that an administrative structure for the implementation of the Land Act has been sent to the Cabinet.

He expressed hope that the new structure can be enforced next month.

“This structure would solve the challenges faced in the implementation of administrative issues,” he said.

It has not been possible to contact Male’ City Council in relation to this matter.
