Speaker of the Parliament and former President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the time was right to introduce a minimum wage and unemployment allowance in the country.

On the occasion of Labor Day, Nasheed tweeted that this was the time to introduce such measures before extending the greetings of the day to workers across the nation.

“In my view, the is the most important time to introduce a minimum wage and unemployment allowance.” Said Nasheed.

The government is working to introduce a minimum wage in the country and the Economic Ministry has requested the view of the parliament in the matter. Discussions were held by the Parliament’s Committee on Economic Affairs regarding the topic.

The government has recently announced the introduction of an unemployment allowance in the country for those who were dismissed from their posts of employment due to the COVID-19 virus. However, Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail reminded that this was not to be confused as an unemployment benefit.
