Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem, on Tuesday, released statistics which reveal the five Criminal Court judges to have the most decisions overturned by High Court.
Shameem released the statistics in response to a tweet regarding the release of one of two suspects who had been arrested for issuing death threats against police officers.
One Twitter user asked why “corrupt judges always release these thugs”, and asked Shameem to “let the law protect the police officers protecting us people”.
In response, Shameem said that not all judges were corrupt.
“I wouldn't say corrupt judges. Not all of them are. We know what goes on in remand hearings at @CRCMaldives [Criminal Court],” he said.
He then released statistics which show the top five Criminal Court judges to have their cases reversed by the High Court over the past three years.
Judge Ibrahim Ali was on top, with 20 reversals in total – all of which were reversed upon appeal by the prosecution.
In second place were Judge Hassan Najeeb and Judge Adam Arif.
Judge Hassan Najeeb had 15 of his decisions reversed- all of which were reversed upon appeal by the prosecution.
Meanwhile, Judge Adam Arif, who was recently transferred from Criminal Court to Drug Court, had 15 of his decisions reversed. 14 decisions were reversed upon appeal by the prosecution, and one was reversed upon appeal by a defendant.
Several Criminal Court judges have been investigated by Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for misconduct, including Judge Ibrahim Ali and Judge Hassan Najeeb. Judge Adam Shareef from the rug Court is also under investigation by JSC.
