Former Attorney General Dr. Mohamed Munavvar has praised Supreme Court Justice Husnu al-Suood’s decision to resign from his position.
In a post on X, Dr. Munavvar praised Suood stating the outgoing Supreme Court Justice is “one of the finest legal brains” of the Maldives, and highlighted Suood’s career as a lawyer and legal academic. Dr. Munavvar also noted Suood’s career as an Attorney General, Judge at the Civil Court and later as a Supreme Court Justice.
“Congratulations and well done!” Dr. Munavvar said in his post.
After initially tendering his letter of resignation to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Suood sent his resignation letter to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
Suood’s letter to JSC had come after some local media reported that the commission had decided against accepting Suood’s resignation since he had sent the letter only to the President.
In both his letters to the President and JSC, Suood made allegations on the government. He alleged the government was influencing the judiciary to stop the ongoing Supreme Court case challenging a recent amendment that added anti-defection clauses to the Maldives Constitution.
Suood’s resignation has come after he was suspended by JSC on Wednesday last week, citing ongoing criminal investigation by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Besides Suood, ACC reported it was investigation potential criminal conduct of two other Supreme Court Justices; Mahaz Ali Zahir and Dr. Azmiralda Zahir.
All three judges presided over the Supreme Court’s case challenging the said constitutional amendment.
Besides the criminal investigations on all three justices, JSC is also investigating disciplinary issues against them.
While Dr. Munavvar has congratulated and praised Suood’s decision to resign, the former Attorney General was earlier seen endorsing President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for presidency.
