Opposition MP files emergency motion seeking assistance to stranded travelers in Male’

People’s National Congress (PNC) deputy leader Adam Shareef Umar, on Wednesday, filed an emergency motion at the Parliament to draw the government’s attention towards the plight of multiple travelers stranded in Male’ City amid the lockdown on the capital.

Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef presented the emergency motion at the virtual parliamentary sitting this morning.

Adam Shareef said that he was unaware of any arrangements by the government to assist travellers from atolls who remain stranded in Male’ due to the imposition of the sudden lockdown on the greater Male’ region following the emergence of COVID-19 cases in the capital.

He said he was also unaware if the government had made any arrangements for homeless people in Male’, or the people who were being evicted from their apartments due to failure to pay rent.

Gender Ministry has stated that it was proving temporary accommodation and food to stranded travelers who have lodged their cases with the government.

The Gender Ministry is already providing food and shelter to 87 people rescued from the streets of Male’, and has stated that it was collaborating with the Male’ City Council to arrange food and shelter to more than 400 people who have lodged their cases with the council.
