President advised to revoke decision that Bilhifeyshi and Thoon

The cabinet has advised President Dr Mohamed Waheed to revoke the decision made by former President Mohamed Nasheed by decree, that Bilhifeyshi and Thoon’du regions of Fuvahmulah are uninhabited islands.

At the cabinet meeting held today, members noted that the decision made by the former government was not fully in line with the Maldivian Constitution or the rule of law in the country. Members also underlined that the majority of the populace in Fuvahmulah want Fuvahmulah to be one island.

Nasheed made this decision on 2 September 2011 at a special function entitled “SAARC’s contribution to Fuvahmulah’s development”.

“I have made the decision that these two regions of this Atoll are two uninhabited islands. The laws stipulate procedures that allow the government to do this. The President has the authority to decide inhabited and uninhabited islands. So the government has decided that these two regions of Fuvahmulah will be uninhabited islands. The most important decision made from today onwards is that this atoll has two uninhabited islands,” Nasheed had said.
