Elections Commission (EC), on Tuesday, said it has approved the released of funds allocated from the State budget for political parties to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Jumhoory Party (JP).
EC said that as of this Tuesday, only MDP and JP had submitted audit reports and annual reports, and the commission had therefore decided to release funding to the two parties in accordance with the law.
The funding for political parties is distributed based on party membership records, which is managed by EC.
Only three political parties meet the membership criteria required to be eligible for the funding; MDP, JP and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
As of December 31, 2019, MDP had 53,748 members and is eligible for MVR 17,612,793.01; PPM had 36,054 members and is eligible for MVR 11,814,609.65; and JP had 12,128 members and is eligible for MVR 3,974,249.34.
