The Maldivian government has advised all Maldivian nationals residing in Philippines to register with the Maldivian embassy in Dhaka, the Bangladeshi capital.

The advisory comes after the Philippines issued a lockdown order for Metro Manila, effective from March 15 to April 14, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The unprecedented move will bar domestic travel in and out of Manila and confine more than 12 million people to the area.

During a press conference at the Maldives National Emergency Response Center on Friday night, spokesperson Mabrook Azeez said Manila was host to a large number of Maldivian medical students.

He said that the Maldivian government, through the Foreign Ministry and the Maldivian embassy in Dhaka, was keeping contact with the students, and keeping a close watch over their situation.

Mabrook later issues a statement via his Twitter account asking Maldivian nationals who reside in Philippines to register with the embassy in Dhaka.

The COVID-19 death toll in Philippines stands at six, and the total number of infected persons stands at 64.
