Drugs worth more than MVR4 million seized in 4 months: Police

Maldives Police Service has informed that drugs worth more than MVR4 million have been seized between June and 10 September 2012.

Speaking at a press conference held at Iskandar koshi today, Head of Drug Enforcement, Chief Inspector of Police Ahmed Azhan said that drugs worth MVR4,361,780 had been seized during this period.

He informed that this includes 3366.4799g heroin worth MVR3,366,480, and 3110.331g cannabis worth MVR995,300.

Police have arrested 324 people for drug crimes during this period, including two minors and twelve women.

The number of drug-related complaints filed to Police during this period is 445, out of which 209 cases have been submitted to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office for investigation.

The cases forwarded to the PG Office include those against Saifullah Hassan of February house, Ga. Dhaandhoo who was arrested on 5 June under suspicion of using and dealing drugs; four people arrested at H. Mayflower on 15 June for possession of large quantities of drugs; and Hussain Ibrahim of Reethi, L. Isdhoo who was arrested on 8 July for drug trafficking.

He also mentioned that drug crimes reported during this period had increased compared with the corresponding period last year.
