President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has submitted a shortlist of four candidates who have applied for membership at Elections Commission (EC) in face of the upcoming expiration of the term of one of its members – Ahmed Akram, who serves as the commission’s Vice Chairman and Spokesperson.
President’s Office had opened applications for the position from January 20 to March 23.
The people who applied for the position included Akram himself, who is on top of the President’s shortlist, clearly indicating his preference.
Others on the list include former EC member Ahmed Fayaz, former EC legal representative Haneefa Khalid, and Ahmed Mansoor.
The Parliament Speaker, former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, at the parliamentary sitting on Monday morning, forwarded the names of the shortlisted candidates to the Independent Institutions Committee for vetting.
A final decision will be made in a vote at the parliamentary floor.
