Not much support for deciding on one candidate for presidential elections: Civil Society Coalition

The Civil Society Coalition has said that not much support is being received from political parties for deciding on one candidate from the coalition, for the upcoming presidential elections.

Vice President of the Civil Society Coalition Abdullah Mohamed said today following a meeting of the Independent Coalition which comprises of four small political parties, that big parties do not support the idea of one coalition candidate because they have already decided on presidential candidates from their respective parties.

He noted that it is not a problem in a democracy that all parties do not support the idea of one coalition presidential candidate.

He said that discussions have been held with parties which had not yet decided to present presidential candidates from their parties; however, no agreement could be reached.

The meeting held between People’s Party, MSDP, Maldives National Congress and IDP, or the Independent Coalition, also did not result in a consensus.

Civil Society Coalition said that further discussions will be held between the four parties.

PPM, DRP and JP have decided to present three separate presidential candidates.
