High Court upholds conviction against Ismail Abdul Hameed

The High Court of the Maldives has upheld a conviction by the Criminal Court against MP Ismail Abdul Hameed. The sentence set at a one-and-half-year exile was also upheld in the judgment given by the High Court last night.

The judgment of the High Court was unanimously made against the Member of Parliament for Kaashidhoo Constituency and senior member of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The Criminal Court had convicted Ismail for committing the crime of unduly and inappropriately using his official position and influence to extract improper benefits for a person close to him.

The High Court of the Maldives first scheduled the hearing held last night for yesterday evening, but the hearing was later postponed.

Ismail Abdul Hameed has continued attending the meetings of the People’s Majlis even after the conviction, causing heated debate and turbulence in the Majlis, due to which no meeting of the Majlis had been conducted as scheduled since 24th of last month.
