Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has filed a case at the Civil Court today, against six resort-owner companies, claiming for 9 million US Dollars due to the government. Reporting to the media, an official from MIRA said today that the case was filed this week after the resort-owners failed to pay the government due rent plus fines. However, MIRA did not reveal the names of those resort owners against whom the action had been initiated.
The Ministry of Tourism sent notices to 8 resort-owners in April for failing to pay the rent and fines due. Kihaaduffaru Resort also defaulted on rent-payment due to the government, and the outstanding amount was paid to MIRA as a lump sum when MIRA filed a court case against Kihaaduffaru.
A similar case has recently been decided by the Civil Court, in which the Galaxy Enterprises, the current private operator of the previously government-owned Nasandura Palace Hotel, was ordered to pay USD 265000 to the government under corporate social responsibility, within one month.
