Nasheed departs to UK

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has departed this morning to the UK on an unofficial trip.

Speaking to reporters in Male’ prior to his departure, Nasheed said that he is scheduled to meet some Ministers of the UK and the Commonwealth Secretary General.

He said that he will brief the participants of the meeting on the current situation in the Maldives.

Nasheed stressed that in order to restore peace in the country, the Constitution must be amended, action must be taken against those responsible for the events of 7 February, and an early election must be held.

“There are three things that need to be done. The Constitution has to be amended. Action has to be taken against those responsible for the events of 7 February. At the same time, an early election must be held to clearly understand who the citizens want as their government,” he said.
