Sarangu Adam Manik's candidacy, heats up race for Male' city mayor

The first mayor of Male' city Sarangu Adam Manik. He announced his candidacy for the local council elections in a bid to retake the post of Male' city mayor in January 2020.

The first mayor of Male’ city Sarangu Adam Manik has announced that he will be taking part in the mayoral race on April 4, 2020. The move by the former mayor has heated an already hotly contested election.

Sarangu Adam Manik stated to “Sun” that his decision was based on his experience with which he believes a positive change can be brought to the city.

The former president of the municipality of Male’ city noted that a lot of work needed to be done for Male’ city council to implement the Agenda 19 of the governing MDP and stated that he will implement the manifesto of he is elected.

He also stated that he had proven that he has the necessary experience and knowledge to run a council. He noted the changes brought under his tenure as mayor to the streets of Male’ city and the Veshifahi program to create a greener Male’ city.

Sarangu Adam Manik was elected as the mayor on February 26, 2011, but resigned in July of the same year. He pointed out the difficulties that residents of Male’ city faced due to his absence. To resolve these issues and difficulties was also one of the reasons why he decided to run.

He then turned his attention to the current council and sharply criticized the council as a failure before stating that he was sure he would win the MDP primary and would be elected with a large majority by the people of Male’ city.

Sarangu Adam Manik also took part in the parliamentary elections and ran for the North Mahchangoalhi district. However, he suffered a resounding defeat in the election.

Other candidates running in the election include incumbent mayor Shifa Mohamed, incumbent deputy mayor Shamaau Shareef, Councilor Ahmed Niyaz, former Feydhoo MP Alhaan Fahmy, former Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and finally attorney and secretary-general of MDP Anas Abdul Sattar.
