Vice Chairman of Elections Commission of Maldives, Ahmed Akram has refuted allegations over the MoU exchanged between the elections commissions of India and Maldives, insisting that the agreement has nothing which requires secrecy.
The MoU was signed on Friday, December 13, during the sixth session of the joint commission meeting held in Hyderabad House, New Delhi.
Akram, who signed the MoU on behalf of EC, took to Twitter this Sunday to refute allegations by the opposition that the agreement was an effort to rig the vote in the upcoming Local Council Elections.
“I can assure you that there’s nothing that requires secrecy in this MoU,” said Akram.
He said the MoU merely stated two areas of cooperation between the two commissions; collaboration in the field of electoral training and sharing of electoral experiences.
India has been providing electoral training to the EC since 2011.
Akram said the recent MoU will increase the number of trainings.
“We are confident in the fairness and transparency of our electoral process,” said Akram.
