The Parliament has instructed Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to form an inter-agency taskforce to investigate the reason for delays in court cases.
The JSC had presented its analysis report on the status of pending cases at the Criminal Court to the Parliament in July. It showed the Criminal Court had 1,910 pending cases up until July 14; 12 of which had been in trial for over 10 years, and 126 of which had been in trial for over five years.
The Judiciary Committee of Parliament, which had evaluated the report, recommended suggesting the JSC to form an inter-agency taskforce to investigate the issue.
The recommendation was called to vote this Tuesday, and passed with the backing of 66 parliamentarians.
The inter-agency taskforce which will be formed by JSC will be mandated to investigate delays in court cases to found out the root causes, produce measures to remedy the delays, and produce measures to fast-track the implementation of the remedies.
