Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group has issued a three-line whip in favor of backing Drug Court Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir to the vacant seat at the Supreme Court.
The move by MDP, which enjoys a supermajority at the Parliament, comes after both Mahaz and former Attorney General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed were named as nominees by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The Judiciary Committee of Parliament, which had evaluated the two nominees, did not side with any one nominee, but left the decision up to the general assembly.
MDP’s parliamentary group convened for a meeting this Tuesday afternoon. It has passed a three-line whip in favor of backing Mahaz at the vote which will take place at 1:30 pm.
The current vacancy at the Supreme Court was left in the wake of the impeachment of former justice Abdulla Didi for ethical misconduct on August 28.
