Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Gasim Ibrahim has urged to halt the Border Control System project, undertaken by Immigration Department in cooperation with Malaysia’s Nexbiz.
Gasim, who is also the Member of Parliament for Maamigili Constituency, said at a press conference held at JP Office, that considering the current situation, the implementation of the Border Control System project should not be allowed.
Gasim explained that the system would result in the passport information of every passenger arriving in Male’ being communicated to a foreign company, and said that this is the same as ‘walking around naked’.
He said that another reason why the project should be halted is that it is too expensive.
“If we had got Singapore’s Border System, I’m certain it would have cost less than $6 million.
What’s more, the Indian government offered to do this for us for free. A senior official of the Indian Official told me that they made this offer. And if we don’t think the free version is good enough, why didn’t we bring the system from Germany,” he said.
Gasim said that Nexbiz makes large profits due to this project being awarded to them.
He further said that regulations have to be changed to allow the Anti-Corruption Commission the authority to halt certain projects.
