Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir says he has forgiven former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom for the MVR 29 million debt he claims to be owed, and has announced plans to withdraw the police complaint he has filed against Maumoon over the issue.

Jabir told Sun this Saturday that he made the decision at the behest of his mother, who had called and instructed him not to go against Maumoon.

He said that he did not wish to disregard his mother’s wishes, and that he had accepted the fact that he needed to forgive the debt because it had been spent by Maumoon to restore democracy to Maldives.

“Therefore, Maumoon has no loan he needs to settle to me from this day on. I have forgiven him,” said Jabir.

The initial complaint he filed with the police over the alleged debt had been rejected by the police due to lack of evidence. He later re-filed the complaint along with evidence.

Jabir, when brought in by the police for its investigation into the case, declined to answer any questions unless in the presence of Maumoon – who was never brought in for questioning.
