Speaker of Parliament, former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has filed candidacy for a second term as leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Both Nasheed, and MDP’s deputy leader Mohamed Shifaz’s terms have expired. The ruling party is scheduled to hold internal elections to fill the vacancies on November 22.
Nasheed filed his candidacy form to MDP headquarters this Saturday morning. His form was accepted by MDP’s secretary-general Anas Abdul Sattar.
Speaking to press, Nasheed said that he had filed his candidacy with the endorsement of a great number of MDP members.

“This is their consent for me to re-run for leadership,” said Nasheed, holding up the signatures.
Mohamed Shifaz, who serves as a minister at the President’s Office, also filed his candidacy to defend his position as deputy leader this Saturday.
Shifaz will be running against North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam - who announced his candidacy this week.
MDP had opened candidacy for its election on Monday, October 14.
