No action can be taken until ACC completes investigation of GMR issue: Government

The government has said that it cannot take any action against GMR until the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) completes its investigation of the cases on GMR.

Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza said that it would not be legal for the government to take action against GMR, while ACC has informed that it is investigating three cases, and another Independent Institution is also investigating a case in relation to the GMR issue.

“ACC’s decision on the issue is very important for the government; it would assist the government in resolving this issue. There’s no legal action the government can take otherwise,” Abbas said.

He said that the GMR case should be investigated by ACC because it is accused of involving corruption, and that discussions are under way between the government and GMR on finding peaceful solutions to the problems.

President of ACC Hassan Luthfee has also confirmed that three cases on GMR are currently under investigation, of which two will be completed and publicised before 15 September. He added that ACC has requested for the assistance of a foreign expert for this investigation.

The Indian government also recently requested the Maldivian government to resolve the problems with GMR. Transport Minister Dr Ahmed Shamheed, who participated in these discussions, said that he informed the Indian government of the Maldivian government’s concerns in relation to its agreement with GMR.
