ACC to probe state payments made to private companies

The Anti-Corruption Commission has started an investigation into unlawfully terminated agreements for which the massive payments were made as damages by the government.

The newly appointed members of the ACC met with reporters for the first time today and stated that the first and biggest case to be investigated by the Commission would be instances of private companies receiving large payments by the state as damages for unlawfully terminated agreements.

Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer recently revealed that the government had made payments of nearly MVR 1 billion to private companies since it came to power.

Criticism has also heated up on the government regarding the most recent such case when the government made a payment of USD 50 million (MVR 848.10 million) to Noomadi Resorts and Residences. Accusations of unlawful activity have also been made towards the government regarding the case by some people.
