Sir Don McKinnon arrives in Maldives

Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma's Special Envoy to the Maldives Sir Donald McKinnon has arrived in the Maldives yesterday.

Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza said that this visit by Sir Don McKinnon was initially planned for prior to the release of the report by the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), established to investigate the transfer of the government.

However, it was postponed due to the conditions present at the time, the long public holidays and the President being out of the country.

Abbas said that the government believes that this will be Sir Don McKinnon’s final visit to the Maldives, and that the President will meet with him to thank him for the Commonwealth’s role in resolving the challenges faced by the Maldives.

Abbas said that the government does not believe that the CMAG should intervene in resolving future challenges faced by the Maldives.

Sun Online has received information that Sir Don McKinnon will also meet former President Mohamed Nasheed and senior officials of the government.

President Dr Mohamed Waheed said while speaking to reporters upon return from him trip to China, that a letter had been sent requesting the countries in CMAG to remove Maldives from the CMAG’s agenda.
