A foreigner has been arrested and deported after he was found to be involved in illegally recruiting foreigners in the country.
The operation by Maldives Immigration to arrest the man named Shafeegul Islam, a 49-year-old Bangladeshi national was a joint effort undertaken with Maldives Police Service. Shafeegul Islam was involved in recruiting foreigners and conducting a wide-scale business in the Maldives illegally. Immigration stated that the man was widely known as "Master" and was responsible for a lot of illegal foreigners in the country.
"This is part of our work to reduce the number of illegal foreigners in the country. We aim to get to the bottom if why foreigners violate the law and gain results by reducing these causes," a statement by Immigration read.
Under the current law, foreigners can conduct business in the Maldives after registering as a company or as a partnership. However, the Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has recently stated that there were a lot of foreigners conducting business in the country under the names of Maldivians.
