Police demands on 6,7 February were legitimate: PIC

The Police Integrity Commission (PIC) has said that the mutiny by the Police from 6 February until the morning of 7 February at Republic Square was in accordance with the right to protest guaranteed in the Constitution.

The PIC’s report on the events of 6 and 7 February states that the Police at the Republic Square demanded that no illegal orders be made to them, subsequent to illegal orders being made to them on several occasions.

According to PIC’s report, the Police’s demands from the Commissioner of Police Ahmed Faseeh, that he gives the assurance that there would be no unlawful orders, and that he gives his assurance not to arrest, incarcerate or punish them for their actions on the night, are legitimate.

The report states that it was members of the public who entered the Republic Square, who called for the resignation of President Nasheed; however, the fact that the Police continued to protest after the situation at the Republic Square turned political, is against the law.

The report said that the PIC had made the decision to take action against Police Officers and former Commissioner of Police Ahmed Faseeh, after investigating their degrees of negligence.
