Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) – founded by former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom – has submitted 3,313 membership forms to Elections Commission (EC) in its bid to register as a political party.

EC confirms MRM submitted the 3,313 membership forms this Thursday.

Permit to establish MRM was originally issued to Higher Education Minister Dr. Ibrahim Hassan. The permit was cancelled after the duration for membership form submission lapsed. And MRM took a new permit, under the name of Maumoon’s daughter and Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Yumna Maumoon.

Regulations require political parties to submit minimum 3,000 membership forms to EC within three months after it issues its permit. Parties which fail to meet the minimum initial membership requirement within the period automatically revoke their permit.
