Adhaalath says will stand up against the government

Adhaalath Party has today said that it would go to discussions with all opposition political parties in the Maldives in an effort to stand up against the government-led harassment of the country’s Judiciary.

In a press meeting held today at Adhaalath Party Office today, President Sheikh Imran Abdullah said that the Party’s Consultative Council had today passed a resolution to lead all opposition sides to protect the independence and dignity of the Judiciary. He said that his party and all those who side with it would unite themselves against the current activities and propaganda wrongfully conducted against the Courts of Law.

Sheikh Imran said that Adhaalath would discuss with all the political parties except the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and also with the Maldives Police Services, the Maldives National Defence Forces, the Judicial Services Commission, on the issue.

Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem, Member of Adhaalath’s Scholars’ Council, said during today’s meeting that Justices who sat at the Supreme Court bench, who have been called lunatics by Ibrahim “Ibraa” Ismail, Special Advisor to the President and MDP’s prominent leader, were the best legal minds that the country could now provide.

Shaheem also said that if his party had to resonate calls to stop the current activities and propaganda to undermine the Judiciary’s independence and dignity all over the country, it would do that.

“We call upon the Maldivian people to respect them, and to stop undermining their dignity. It is the highest authority vested with the power to protect our Constitution, and so when we have a duty to protect its dignity and independence, we shall do it, and also if we have to do anything to correct something about the Supreme Court, we shall do it as well”, said Shaheem.

President Imran said that his party was prepared to run demonstrations along with other opposition sides, if it becomes necessary in order to confront MDP’s continued attacks against the Judiciary.
