Dhiddhoo Councillor Abdullah Waheed denies allegations of creating unrest

Allegations of contributing to the loss of peace and order in the society have been denied by Ha. Dhiddhoo Council Member Abdullah Waheed and group.

The State has pressed charges against the Councillor along with two of his brothers, namely Ubaidullah Saeed and Ali Hashim of Autumn Vaadhee; plus Farhad Abubakr, Faseeh Abubakr, and Mohamed Abubakr of Nooraanee Villa, Ha. Dhiddhoo.

They have all denied the allegations against them.

The State Prosecutor said while presenting the case at the hearing at Criminal Court today that confrontations took place between the security officials and members of the public, at the gathering on the beach to welcome former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom when he arrived in Dhiddhoo on 6 January 2008.

During this unrest, Councillor Abdullah Waheed and his brother Ubaidullah Saeed had obstructed officials when they tried to take them under arrest, while Faseeh Abubakr had punched a Police Officer in the eye.

As all of the persons mentioned above had obstructed the Police and pulled on the uniforms of Police Officers, they are charged with participating in an illegal gathering and contributing to the loss of peace and order in the society.

The Judge has granted the defendants’ request to appoint lawyers, and said that lawyers must be appointed before the next session which will be held on 18 September.

He also informed the State and defendants that all evidence must be presented at the next session, after which no opportunity will be given to present evidence.

Councillor Abdullah Waheed said that he had attended Court on ten occasions in relation to this trial, for which he has received no compensation.

The Judge said that since the defendants had denied the allegations against them, their penalties if convicted will not be lenient.
