Former President Mohamed Nasheed has accepted the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), established by President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to investigate the change of government.
In response to a question by Sun Online at a press conference held today at Mookai Hotel, Nasheed stressed that his decision to accept the report is with the concerns raised by his representative to the CNI, Gaha Ahmed Saeed.
When asked if he had agreed with international groups to accept the report regardless of the CNI’s findings, Nasheed replied, “Yes.”
The government has earlier stated that Nasheed had agreed with the Commonwealth, to accept CNI’s report regardless of the Commission’s findings.
Nasheed said that it is still his personal belief that the government was changed through a coup; however, that the current government can no longer be called a ‘coup government’ following his decision to accept CNI’s report.
“I am not questioning. I accept the report, with respect for Saeed’s concerns,” Nasheed said.
He said that according to the findings in the report, there are no grounds for further discussion on how the government changed on 7 February.
“However, the report does note that the Police and Military violated the law. So people will still call them traitors,” Nasheed said.
Nasheed urged all political groups to take urgent action against the Police and Military Officers who acted illegally.
He said that action should be taken against everyone who, according to the report, performed illegal actions, and that he would not object to cases being filed against him to court.
Nasheed noted that the Commonwealth will consider Saeed’s concerns when it reviews the report.
