Man convicted of arson attack on Police motorcycle sentenced to 15 years in prison

The Criminal Court has sentenced the person convicted of setting fire to a Police motorcycle, during the protests by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on the day of the Presidential Address to the Parliament, to 15 years in prison.

The man convicted of this crime is Fawaz Kalhuthutthu of H. Redhan.

Criminal Court’s verdict details that a witness had provided testimony in Court, that Fawaz opened the petrol tank of a fallen motorcycle at the crossroad of Alikiligefaanu magu/ Majeedee magu on 1 March 2012 at around 16:30, and set it on fire using a lighter.

A video had also been presented in Court, which shows Fawaz setting fire to the motorcycle and then fleeing the scene.

Following the presentation of this and more undisputable evidence, Fawaz was convicted under article 2(f) of the Terrorism Prevention Act, and sentenced to 15 years in prison as per the penalty for this crime stipulated in article 6(b) of the same Act.
