Patrolling policemen stop mugging in progress in Male’ City

Two police officers from Maldives Police Service intervened to stop a mugging in progress in Fareedhee Magu of Male’ City last Wednesday night.

Maldives Police Service reports the attempted mugging took place in front of the shop, Fathaha Sunbuli at approximately 11:23 pm.

One of the would-be-muggers, identified as an 18-year-old Maldivian male, was taken into custody while the second escaped.

Maldives Police Service reports the two suspects, who had been wearing helmets to disguise their identities, had used their motorcycle to block off road access to the would-be victim, who himself had been on a motorcycle and carrying a large amount of cash. The attempted mugging was seen by two police officers operating in the area at the time, who intervened to stop the mugging.

The police officers had arrested the 18-year-old suspect at the scene, while the second suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, evaded arrest.

Robberies, specifically hits on cash-in-transits, has recently been on the rise in Male’ City. Maldives Police Service has advised to seek assistance from the Police Installation Security during cash-in-transits.
