Gaha Saeed resigns from CNI

Former President Mohamed Nasheed’s representative to the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), Gaha Ahmed Saeed has resigned from the Commission, less than 24 hours before the CNI is scheduled to release its much-awaited report.

The CNI was established to investigate the controversial change of government in February.

Saeed told reporters today that there is no point in him being part of the Commission, as nothing could be achieved through his contributions to the CNI.

He noted that the CNI’s report neither states that action should be to be taken against those who had committed crimes, nor includes any recommendations to ensure that a ‘unique coup’ does not take place in the Maldives in the future.

“I do not wish to be part of something that will not result in anything positive for the people,” he said.

Saeed said that he had hoped to explain the truth behind the events of 6, 7 and 8 February by acting as Nasheed’s representative to the CNI.

He refused to respond to reporters’ questions, indicating that he did not wish to comment on CNI’s report before it is released.
