Weekly traffic stats: 62 accidents, 6 injuries

Maldives Police Service reports six people were injured in 62 road accidents last week – from February 16 – February 22.

Weekly traffic statistics released by MPS this Tuesday shows the agency conducted spot checks on 1,094 vehicles, during which it identified 752 vehicles operated without a driving license and five vehicles operated by minors. And addition 94 of the vehicles were operated by licensed drivers who didn’t have their license with them at the time.

MPS also identified 63 vehicles operated by drivers who failed to comply with traffic signs and five vehicles operated by drivers who failed to comply with traffic signals.

The 1,094 vehicles also include 201 vehicles without insurance, 721 vehicles with annual fees overdue, and 662 vehicles with overdue roadworthiness payment.

The police also detained 160 individuals driving with headphones on or talking on the phone while driving.

MPS has recently strengthened its operations to maintain safety and security of roads.
