Maldives Labor and Social Democratic Party (Labor Party) has been registered as a political party by Elections Commission (EC).
Labor Party’s founder, Abdulla Haseen was presented with the party’s letter of registration by President of EC, Ahmed Shareef, in a function held at EC this Monday.
Accepting the letter, Haseen promised the party will not revolve around a single politician.
“In accordance with our bylaws, we are run by a 15-member leadership committee. The leadership committee will have a chairperson and deputy chairperson. They will change every six months. So the party will not have a specific leader,” said Haseen.
“This party will not be one which revolves around a particular figure. We will strongly focus on our policies and the enforcement of our policies,” he added.
Haseen also announced the Labor Party’s intention of running in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
“We have hinted we plan on running in the upcoming parliamentary elections. We can’t comment on the specific electoral districts yet, but a sufficient number of our members will run on behalf of this party in the parliamentary elections,” said Haseen.
The Labor Party submitted 3,000 membership forms to the EC on December 6, 2018, and was issued permission to hold its first congress on December 19, 2018.
Labor Party held its first congress on January 11.
