Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will accept the findings of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) in its report, and that the report will reveal that the change of government was ‘not right’.
Speaking at Usfasgandu last night at a rally held to resume MDP’s political activities, Nasheed urged members of MDP to comply with CNI’s findings.
He expressed confidence that the report will not describe any incident that had not been experienced by MDP.
Nasheed said that he was approached by the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) for a statement regarding its investigation of the events of 6 and 7 February; however, he had told HRCM that it cannot be justified to provide a statement to them before the CNI publishes its report.
He said that the fact that HRCM did not provide a statement to CNI raises several questions.
He further criticised HRCM, and said that the purpose of its recent report was to cover up some issues which the CNI might mention in its report.
“It is hard to accept that HRCM’s report was about human rights violations,” he said.
Referring to the protest by Police and MNDF Officers against him on 7 February, Nasheed said that that protest was triggered by some Police and MNDF Officers’ belief that he had acted in violation of the Constitution.
He said that it is not the responsibility of the Police and MNDF to rectify a President’s illegal activities.
“If an illegal order is issued to the Police and MNDF, the rule is that they should remain silent. The rules do not say that they should protest against that order. The President issuing illegal orders is not the issue which is currently under investigation. Neither is it an excuse which can be used by the Police,” Nasheed said.
The CNI will publish its report on Thursday next week. Nasheed did not mention in his speech, how he is already informed of the contents of this report.
