Increasing the number of Maldivian teachers and reducing the number of expatriate teachers in the Maldivian education sector is one of the administration’s biggest objectives, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Speaking at the inauguration of Huravee School – the largest public school in Maldives – this Sunday morning, Solih noted that the teaching staff at the new school was completely made up of Maldivians.
He said that the contribution of Maldivians in the education sector will show an increase this academic year.
“We want to completely convert to an island nation schooling system by reducing contribution of expatriates in this sector and increasing contribution of Maldives. This is one of this administration’s most important objectives,” said Solih.
He said that the number of Maldivian teachers increased by 2 percent and number of expatriate teachers decreased by 16 percent in 2017.
“With more than 9,800 teachers this year, the difference will further increase this year,” said Solih.
Solih said that more than 600 students will graduate from the Maldives National University (MNU) this year – which will increase the contribution of Maldivians in the education sector – and contribute to realization of another goal of the administration – increasing contribution of the younger generation in education sector.
“I believe human resource development is vital for development of Maldives. And this is one of the most important work the administration will do for the development of Maldives,” said Solih, reiteration the administration’s commitment to education.
