Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has presented himself for questioning at the Maldives Police Service headquarters amid street demonstrations by both his supporters and opposers.

PPM announced earlier that Yameen will walk to the police headquarters.

He, however, chose to travel by car amid exchange of words between pro-Yameen demonstrators and anti-Yameen demonstrators.

Yameen was escorted to the police headquarters by Deputy Leader of PPM, and Legal Affairs Minister at the President’s Office during his administration, Aishath Azima Shakoor.

Police have closed down the Green Zone where the police headquarters is located.

And anti-Yameen demonstrators have gathered as close as they can get to the headquarters without entering the Green Zone.

The police report Yameen is under investigation for suspected illegal financial transactions in connection with campaign proceedings transferred to his personal bank accounts.

The Criminal Court has ordered a freeze on Yameen’s bank accounts.
