First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim has returned to Maldives from her unofficial trip abroad.

The First Lady had travelled abroad on October 6 following the defeat of her spouse, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, during the recent presidential elections.

The timing of the First Lady’s trip had fueled allegations by the opposition that she had ‘fled’ abroad.

She was greeted upon arrival at the Velana International Airport this Thursday morning by President Yameen and several Cabinet ministers.

Senior officials of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and dozens of her supporters were waiting to greet her at the Izzuddin Jetty when she arrived in Male’ City.

Official sources have been tight-lipped about the First Lady’s trip abroad. But unofficial sources report she had travelled to Saudi Arabia with her son.
