Adhaalath Party has condemned Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari’s decision to return to the government as Minister of Islamic Affairs only few days after his resignation from the same office.
Adhaalath Party broke up its coalition with the ruling MDP weeks ago, and called upon Dr. Majeed, then the only Member representing Adhaalath in the Cabinet, to resign. Adhaalath also requested Minister of State for Islamic Affairs Sheikh Hussain Rasheed Ahmed, another prominent leader of Adhaalath, to resign from his office.
Following the request of Adhaalath, Dr. Majeed immediately resigned as the President of the Council of Scholars of Adhaalath Party, while Sheikh Hussain rejected Adhaalath’s request outright. Few days later, Dr. Majeed resigned as Minister, saying that he had decided to resign in order to comply with his party’s request and decision. Adhaalath warmly greeted Dr. Majeed’s decision and congratulated him, describing him as a model leader.
However, Dr. Majeed’s decision to return to the same Cabinet post has earned him heavy criticism from Adhaalath, which today said that his latest decision is “morally reprehensible” and in contravention to the decision and policies of the party.
In a Statement issued today, Adhaalath Party said that Dr. Majeed’s actions in resigning as Islamic Minister claiming that he was complying with the decision of the party and then again returning to the position within days were completely unacceptable, and against the party’s constitution.
Adhaalath’s Statement also accused Dr. Majeed of violating his oath as a Member of Adhaalath’s Council of Scholars.
“Dr. Majeed has returned to his Ministerial position in clear disregard of Adhaalath Party, and the advice of most of the dignified religious scholars of the Maldives. He has also breached the oath he had taken as Member of the Party’s Council of Scholars, and violated the policies of the party adopted in upholding the Party constitution. We view his action is morally reprehensible, and on the said grounds, we condemn the return of Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari to the Cabinet in strictest terms”, read the Statement.
Adhaalath’s Statement also denied the claims made by Dr. Majeed saying that he had consulted the Party before accepting the Ministerial post again. According to Adhaalath party, Dr. Majeed had “lied straight”.
