We will listen to PG Leaders

The President’s Office has said that the government will listen to the arguments of the Parliamentary Group Leaders at tomorrow’s meeting.

Spokesperson of the President’s Office Abbas Adil Riza said that the government will not propose to make decisions at tomorrow’s meeting between VP Mohamed Waheeddeen and Parliamentary Group Leaders.

“The government will listen to their arguments tomorrow. The Speaker of Parliament has requested that the government listens to their concerns. Decisions will be made later,” he said.

He added that so far, no meetings other than tomorrow’s has been scheduled.

“The President does not wish for the government to involve itself in legislative procedures. The Parliament is a separate, independent body. They have to decide on how to proceed, under the Speaker’s leadership. The President can only assist with administrative matters. Legally, there is no room to assist with political matters,” he said.

Abbas noted that the government will not accept the Parliament being halted, and highlighted that the Parliament functioned under much more challenging circumstances than the country’s situation.

The Parliament was disrupted indefinitely on 31 July citing loss of order, as a result of MDP Parliamentarians’ efforts to halt the Parliament.
