Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has informed that the MNDF training facility island, K. Than’burudhoo, is to be developed as a tourist resort.
MNDF Spokesperson Lieutenant Abdullah Ali said today that the plan to develop Than’burudhoo as a resort was approved by the government in 2010.
“The plan has not been implemented so far, but efforts in this regard are now underway,” he said.
Than’burudhoo is an island also popular among surfers.
MNDF also registered a joint venture company last week, for the purpose of carrying out various forms of business activities.
Lieutenant Abdullah Ali said that the MNDF Company plans to conduct business activities to improve welfare services for MNDF personnel, in addition to the development of the resort.
Sun Online has learned that a Singaporean Company had earlier expressed interest to develop Than’burudhoo as a resort catered towards surfers; however, the Tourism Ministry refused to comment on this.
Surfers have expressed concern over the development of Than’burudhoo as a resort, as the manner in which the island is constructed may adversely affect the height of waves.
Moreover, several groups have expressed concern over MNDF’s participation in business activities, as most government companies are not profitable.
