Mahir released from Police custody

Police have released the former Minister of State for Home Affairs Mohamed Mahir Eesa at around midnight last night. Mahir was arrested under accusations of inciting violence against the Police.

His period of detention is valid tomorrow afternoon.

A Police Media Official said that Mahir was released after completion of investigations, and that the Court had been informed, as required, of his release before the end of his detention period.

Mahir was arrested following a speech made by him at MDP camp area Usfasgandu on 12 July, in which he encouraged the crowd to attack the Police, and participate in violent activities against the security forces.

A video played by the Police at a press conference showed Mahir asking the crowd to use whatever weapons they can get their hands on, to attack the people who had conducted the ‘coup’.

He also said in the video that our religion also encourages us to fight ‘traitors’ until they fall to the ground.
