Minister of Islamic Affairs resigns from office

Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari today resigned as Minister of Islamic Affairs.

Speaking to Sun, Dr. Majeed said today that he decided to resign from his office in compliance with the request of his party to do so after the party’s decision to break off its coalition alliance with the ruling MDP on the 26th of last month.

“As you know, Adaalath Party has terminated its coalition with MDP, and has officially asked me to resign as Minister of Islamic Affairs. That is why I submitted my resignation today”, said Dr. Majeed.

Dr. Majeed said that he had not yet received any reply from the President’s Office.

Dr. Majeed had previously resigned as the President of the Scholars’ Council at Adaalath Party as well, immediately after the communication of Adaalath’s letter asking him to resign as Minister.

Dr. Majeed said that he had not made up his mind on what course of action to follow after his resignation.

Adaalath Party had called upon Deputy Minister of Islamic Affairs, Hussain Rasheed Ahmed, as well to resign from his office. Hussain Rasheed, who is also a prominent leader of Adaalath just as Dr. Majeed, however, had immediately rejected the request of Adaalath and heavily criticized his own party for terminating coalition with ruling MDP.

Mohamed Zuhair, Press Secretary at the President’s Office, praised Dr. Majeed hours after the latter’s resignation, describing him as a “model personality”. Remarking that he was surprised to learn about Dr. Majeed’s resignation, Zuhair said that he had served the government and people with exemplary honesty and dedication. Zuhair assured that a new person would be appointed to the office of Minister of Islamic Affairs.
